Barrie Livingstone has been setting the tone for interior design for three decades now. The celebrated designer and realtor has made it his life’s work to bring his clients’ visions to life.
Educated at High Point University, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Livingstone has had quite the illustrious career thus far. As a realtor, he works for the famed Sotheby’s International Realty firm as part of its Malibu office. His work is well known in Malibu where he was chosen by Cher to design her mansion. He has also been a part of other projects like Big Rock Malibu Beach and Malibu Beach Road.
In addition to his extensive work in Malibu, Livingstone has worked across the globe. He has partnered with multiple hotel brands to design their international looks. These include Intercontinental Hotel Group, Marriott, Mandarin Oriental, and Southern Sun. Livingstone’s designs can be found in locations as far flung as Malaysia and Dubai.
In 2015, Livingstone released his first book, Interior Design Tips Every Realtor Should Know, But Doesn’t. In the book, Livingstone combines the expertise he has gained in his two careers as an interior designer and realtor to show how good design is essential to making a good sale. According to him, “Presentation is everything and cannot be more true than when selling a property. The more you can do to make a property look its best the quicker it will sell and for a higher dollar amount.” The book is a must read for any realtor or individual looking to improve their home’s look.
Livingstone has made bringing good design to the masses one of his more recent goals. He has opened his House of Barrie store with two locations in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico and Hollywood, California. The store is described as “a lifestyle and home furnishings brand influenced by design, function, and form.” It gives shoppers the opportunity to “conveniently source one-of-a-kind looks for any space through our intuitive showroom-like shopping experience.” The store features pieces for all parts of the home, from the kitchen to the bathroom to outdoor areas. High-end brands like Jonathan Adler and Nature of Things make up the inventory.
The latest adventure Livingstone is embarking on is an exciting one. He is no stranger to television, having appeared on HGTV, Bravo, TLC, and The Discovery Channel. Now, he is developing his own show in partnership with producer Kathleen Lojkovic’s Back 2 Originals Productions company. Mr. Livingstone, I Presume? will follow the designer as he explores boutique hotels and cultures around the world.
Barrie Livingstone certainly has a packed schedule. After years of making a name for himself in the residential and hospitality industries, he has no plans to slow down. For Livingstone, good design will always remain the most important part of his job. He is excited to continue to find new ways to bring this to people, whether they are personal clients or simply fans of his work.
